Part 1: Reconnecting and Renewing at Japan’s Smart City Frontier
Attending the 2024 SusHi Tech Tokyo conference was more than just participating in an exhibition—it was a profound reminder of the relationships, insights, and shared purpose that underpin innovation. Set against the backdrop of a vibrant, technologically sophisticated venue, the event brought together changemakers in urban sustainability from across the globe.
Rediscovering Familiar Faces
In an increasingly digitised world, in-person reconnections are more valuable than ever. One of the most meaningful aspects of this trip was reuniting with old friends. Whether through casual catchups or deep conversations, each exchange underscored the timeless strength of real human connection.
Learning from Mentors
Equally impactful was the opportunity to reconnect with mentors—individuals who have shaped my professional trajectory and startup journey. Their guidance has been instrumental in helping us navigate product development, go-to-market strategy, and fundraising. Re-engaging with them in a face-to-face setting brought renewed clarity and encouragement as we advance our entrepreneurial roadmap.
Revisiting Past Collaborators
Beyond mentorship, the conference offered a unique platform to exchange ideas with former colleagues—those with whom I once shared the grind of early-stage startup life. Recalling our collective efforts before the pandemic was both nostalgic and inspiring. Some have since become founders or moved into leadership roles in consulting, demonstrating just how fast time—and growth—moves.
These exchanges weren’t just reminiscing—they were forward-looking discussions on the current tech landscape, market challenges, and shared ambitions. They sparked ideas for future collaboration and offered practical insights into how we can leverage each other’s strengths in upcoming ventures.
Forming New Partnerships
The event also proved fertile ground for meeting new partners—people who bring fresh energy, perspectives, and experiences. These new connections were more than just name cards exchanged; they laid the groundwork for cross-sector innovation. We spoke not only of synergies but also of shared challenges and what collaboration in the sustainability and smart city domains could look like.
Engaging with professionals from diverse industries reaffirmed a vital insight: the most transformative solutions are born from collaboration. These dialogues revealed that while our sectors may differ, the hurdles we face—regulatory complexity, adoption bottlenecks, talent gaps—are often shared. From these discussions emerged a collective will to co-create.
Conclusion: Laying the Groundwork for What’s Next
The first chapter of my SusHi Tech Tokyo experience was an emotional blend of nostalgia and forward momentum. Reunions with trusted allies brought perspective and grounding. New alliances offered promise and possibility. This wasn’t just a tech summit—it was a celebration of the relationships that power long-term innovation.
As we look ahead to the rest of this Tokyo journey, I’m energised by the connections we’ve rekindled and the collaborations we’ve just begun. Stay tuned for Part 2, where I’ll dive into the JETRO Startup Night and share more insights from Japan’s smart city evolution.
