Opinions are my own

Shortly after joining the company, I had the honour of attending the launch ceremony for a newly constructed purse seiner—a vessel designed for the open seas and engineered with the latest sustainability technologies. While steeped in tradition, the event carried a deeply symbolic meaning: the start of a vessel’s operational life and a renewed commitment to responsible marine stewardship. As I stood on the pier, watching the ship gently slide into the water, I was filled with a sense of awe and purpose. This was more than just a launch—it was a moment of alignment between technological innovation and sustainability values.

Equipped with cutting-edge selective fishing equipment, the vessel is designed to enhance efficiency while significantly reducing bycatch and protecting non-target species. Advanced onboard monitoring systems enable real-time tracking of environmental parameters and fishing activity, contributing to better ocean management practices. For me, witnessing this integration of engineering and ethics underscored the role sustainability professionals must play in bridging environmental responsibility with operational effectiveness.

The launch day began under a calm morning sun. Crowds gathered at the dock—company colleagues, industry partners, local community members, and marine conservation advocates—united by a shared belief in a sustainable ocean future. The atmosphere was one of hope and anticipation.

A veteran captain began the proceedings by introducing the new vessel and highlighting its significance for the future of the fleet. His remarks, filled with reverence for the sea and pride in innovation, captured the essence of our collective journey. The ship’s features—selective gear to minimise ecological disruption and real-time ocean monitoring systems—are evidence of our commitment to best-in-class environmental practices.

The symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony followed. Our CEO took centre stage, scissors in hand, to formally inaugurate the vessel into service. Stakeholders stepped forward to offer their blessings—one elder’s words lingered in my memory: a heartfelt wish for calm seas, safe journeys, and bountiful harvests.

While I didn’t witness the actual water entry due to safety procedures, the imagined moment—the hull slicing into the sea, the spray rising—was vivid. It represented a convergence of tradition and transformation, a reminder that our mission is not just to harvest fish, but to coexist with the ocean in a responsible, regenerative way.

Looking Ahead: Sustainability as a Compass

This experience deepened my understanding of the seafood industry and affirmed my decision to pursue a career in sustainability. The global fishing sector faces immense challenges—climate change, overfishing, plastic pollution—but it also offers meaningful opportunities for innovation and impact.

By participating in this launch, I saw first-hand how technological advancement and stakeholder collaboration can turn ambition into action. The vessel is not just a tool for economic activity, but a platform for promoting sustainable fisheries. As a sustainability specialist, this strengthens my resolve to push for cross-functional solutions that respect the planet while supporting livelihoods.

The journey ahead is full of complexity. But each innovation, each dialogue, and each commitment moves us closer to a healthier, more sustainable ocean. I’m proud to be part of a team that sees environmental responsibility not as a constraint, but as a catalyst for growth and resilience.

Let us sail forward—together, with courage and clarity—for the sake of the oceans and the generations to come.
