Weaving Purpose into Profession: Why I Returned to Taiwan for a Career in Sustainable Tuna Trade

In the tapestry of life, each thread represents a choice, a transformation, or a serendipitous encounter that shapes our journey. My recent decision to return to Taiwan—after years abroad—to join the world’s largest tuna trading company as a sustainability project manager was not merely a career move. It was a conscious choice to add a vivid, purposeful thread to my life’s design. Beyond a change in geography or employment, this transition marked a convergence of professional ambition, personal values, and a longing to reconnect with my roots.

Deepening My Commitment to Sustainability

In an era where corporate sustainability is no longer optional but expected, aligning with an employer that genuinely integrates environmental and ethical considerations into its operations was paramount. My preliminary research into the company revealed a robust, action-oriented commitment to sustainability—particularly in responsible sourcing and marine biodiversity conservation. Rather than treating ESG as a marketing afterthought, the company has embedded sustainability into its supply chain practices, setting industry benchmarks and influencing broader market standards.

For me, this was more than due diligence—it was a litmus test. A firm that not only complies with evolving regulations but also drives new standards for sustainability inspires innovation, continuous learning, and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, system-level change.

A Personal Connection to a Trusted Brand

There is a unique resonance when your personal history intersects with professional opportunity. One of the company’s subsidiaries in Canada was a household name in my own life—a brand I trusted for years. This unexpected connection bridged the emotional and geographic distance between my past abroad and my present in Taiwan. It gave my new role emotional weight and cultural familiarity.

Joining the organisation meant becoming part of a narrative I had once only observed from the outside. Now, I have the privilege to contribute to that story from within, ensuring that the values of quality and integrity I once admired as a consumer continue to define the brand’s future.

Shared Values with Organisational Leadership

One of the most unexpected yet personally affirming aspects of this transition was discovering that both the CEO and my direct supervisor share my faith background. In a corporate world where alignment of belief and culture can be rare, this offered a rare sense of community and moral grounding. The workplace culture is underpinned by principles of compassion, stewardship, and integrity—values that resonate deeply with me.

This shared foundation strengthens my conviction that the company is not solely profit-driven, but guided by a moral compass that is aligned with my own. Within this environment, I am confident that my work will not only deliver business results but also contribute to a broader positive impact in the world.

A Journey Rooted in Purpose and Reconnection

Returning to Taiwan to join a company at the forefront of sustainable tuna trade represents more than a new chapter—it symbolises a fusion of ambition and purpose. It affirms my belief in responsible business as a lever for global transformation and exemplifies how career paths can align with deeply held values.

As I embark on this journey, I remain optimistic about the impact we can create—not just for the environment, but for ethical leadership in business. This homecoming is not merely a return—it is a re-entry into a narrative of legacy, sustainability, and shared values. My role now contributes to something far greater than myself: a movement toward long-term planetary stewardship through innovation and integrity.

Standing at this new beginning, I am ready for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. And I hope my story inspires others to consider how they too might build a career that is not only successful, but also meaningful and sustainable.
